“It’s important to have the right attitude, work hard and love what you do. Treat each job as if it is the most important job and do it to the best of your ability. Because to the client it is the most important job” says Frances Hathaway. It is this consummate professionalism combined with a dexterous creativity that has propelled Hathaway to the height of the beauty industry.
Hathaway’s acclaimed career spans more than two decades and as many continents. Hailing from Toronto, Frances was the first freelance makeup artist to represent a new cosmetic company founded by fellow Canadians and close friends, Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo known as MAC. Seeking a broader platform for her work, Frances relocated to London where her incomparable style lead her to work throughout Europe with some of the greatest photographers of our time such as Nick Knight, David Bailey, Lord Snowden, Horst, Francesco Scavullo, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson, Irving Penn, and Mario Testino.
Not content with just the printed page, Frances sought to expand her creative expression with fashion shows, collaborating with Katherine Hamnett on some of fashionʼs most iconic moments. Always a visionary, Frances helped establish the MAC brand in England and Europe by using the new companyʼs product exclusively at these shows. Common practice now but unheard of at the time.
With her credit in the pages of all the major fashion magazines, top tier fashion shows under her belt (not to mention having worked with such reknowned personalities as Paul and Linda McCartney, Julie Christie, and Princess Diana) it was time to return to North America. It was time for New York. Her name firmly established in the fashion world, Francesʼ reputation grew at a rapid pace in the global media capital. She lent her vision for fashion shows and campaigns with designers such as Randolph Duke, Carmen Marc Valvo, Carlos Miele, Carolina Herrera, and Vera Wang. Celebrities like Bette Midler, Faye Dunaway, Vanessa Williams, Iman, and Bjork dew upon her talent for still and moving images alike. With Francesʼ precision and range, it was not long before industry giants like Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancome, and Prescriptives tapped her artistry for global beauty campaigns ranging from skin care products to color cosmetics. Her long history with MAC Cosmetics continued with several campaigns in collaboration with James Gager, the creative force behind the outrageously successful brand.
Always approaching the next project with the same passion as her first, Frances Hathawayʼs creative vision is as fresh today as ever. Mega-stars like Kelly Clarkson and Naomi Watts along with up-and-coming stars like Jourdann Dunn rely on Frances to make them look their best in videos and print. Clients like Almay, Avon, Garnier, Maybelline, Olay, Sephora and yes, MAC Cosmetics call on her to contribute her superlative skills and well-honed eye to elevate their creative vision.
Hathaway’s signature style of precision spans from the polished to the avant-garde.
