Nick Barose was born and raised in Thailand where his fascination with makeup and colors was instilled in him from very early on. Growing up with two sisters and many female cousins, having an interest in beauty was only natural. Barose recalls as a young boy, he and his sisters going through their mother’s closet, playing dress up with 60s dresses, hair pieces, and Mary Quant makeup crayons.
In the early 90s, Barose moved to New York City to study environmental design at Parsons School of Design. Though he enjoyed the discipline of his studies, his passion for makeup soon resurfaced, and he recognized that a career in beauty was something he wanted to pursue more seriously.
Barose began his formal makeup training by assisting Kevyn Aucoin. Since then, he has risen to the top of his field. He counts numerous Hollywood stars as his clients including Lupita Nyong’o (from her memorable Oscars season, her Vogue and Vanity Fair covers, as well as her Lancome campaigns) Jane Fonda, Rachel Weisz, Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, Tracee Ellis Ross, Holly Hunter, Zoe Kravitz, Brit Marling, Tessa Thompson, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, among many others.
It is Barose’s refreshing beauty philosophy that appeals to a diverse group of Hollywood stars. He is known for creating beautiful, flawless, and fresh looks with a slight twist on every skin tone. “I like to use make up to help bring out their personalities even more. My clients don’t really want drastic makeovers which erase the face and make everyone look the same. I love making each person look like themselves, but just a bit dreamier, more colorful, and more exciting” Barose currently splits his time between Los Angeles and New York City.
