Makeup artist, beauty expert, photographer and all around creative, Robin Black, is known for her highly inventive approach to beauty. She documents her makeup artistry through an intimate, collaborative process with her subjects – from top models and editors, to musicians, Olympic athletes, artists and actors – resulting in striking photographs and videos that celebrate an inclusive, modern, vision of beauty.
Black founded BEAUTY IS BORING in 2012 as a personal artistic outlet and it has since gained a devoted following among editors, curators, collectors, top models, beauty insiders and hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe. Aside from her personal work for the blog, she creates original content for prestige brands that ranges from social media campaigns and advertising images to at-counter tutorial videos, store displays and short creative films. Most recently she has collaborated with Dior, Estée Lauder, Urban Decay, L’oreal, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, Revlon and NARS.
Prior to launching Beauty Is Boring, Robin was a top professional makeup artist for over a decade, working with publications such as Vogue, Elle, Allure, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, i-D, Rolling Stone, W and Vanity Fair. Her runway clients include Mugler Paris, Gucci, Diane Von Furstenburg, Imitation of Christ, St.John, Escada and Damien Hirst for Warhol Factory X. Robin’s celebrity clients include Jessica Chastain, Selena Gomez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Chloe Sevigney, Lorde, Demi Lovato, Eva Mendez, Rosie Huntington Whitely, Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford, Saorise Ronan, Karen Gillan, Olivia Wilde, Miranda Kerr and Lake Bell. Also of note, her makeup work in art films and video installations has been displayed in the Tate Museum, the MOMA, the Whitney Biannual, Cannes Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. Robin was also the founding creative director for Violet Grey and helped launch the initial platform.
Robin’s photographs have been featured in many publications including Allure, Vogue Korea, Elle, Elle FR, Teen Vogue, i-D Magazine, Cosmopolitan, L’Officiel, Viva Moda, The Journal, Paper, Nylon, Stella and Dazed.
